Deliverance - Agony - by Mur4s4me Deliverance - Agony - by Mur4s4me

Before you comment, please make sure you have read the entire comment. I might have answered one of your questions/nitpicks already.

"Why... I really wonder why I hold myself from crying..."

This has been remade in painting format here: [link]

School project for Art History class (yes, history class). We have to create an art movement, and to represent it, our team has to create some arts.

This one is my part of the work and the theme is quite clear here: rape. My source of inspiration comes from two deviations : [link] [link]

The girl on this picture represent the girls and women who got raped and keep it for themselves instead of reporting the horror. Fake smile and tears representing her agony and the wounded angel wing, her need for deliverance. High contrast of black and white; black illustrates her deep despair while the white is the presence of hope... There some other symbolism concerning the wall, but I'll leave it to your guess :D

What is your interpretation when you first saw the pic, before reading my comment? :)

_________

Rape has always been a subject that affects me a lot. Never will I be indifferent and get used to this kind of disgusting act. I've also always wanted to do a piece on it, so I took this chance to combine two things I really wanted to use: india ink and this theme.

Also, read ~MEGAN-Yrrbby's deviation's comment too [link] if you want to know a bit more about some shocking statistics.

Even though the picture is quite... something, I hope you'll still like it ^_^

I really love this piece. It's such a shame though, how victims of rape tend to keep the pain bottled up inside other than reporting the attack, and having to suffer the agony of the aftermath alone or worse get attacked repeatedly or deal with additional consequences. It's just unacceptable and heartbreaking.

I especially like the symbolism put into it and the black/white contrast signifying despair/hope, a very fragile balance in these situations. Excellent job!

I've been asked by some people, especially women, why do "I" think a lot of rape victims stay silent. I think that if anything, emotional/spiritual pain can bring anyone to their knees, and that might be what keeps them in the dark. Humiliation, nonacceptance, betrayal, all of these negative emotions contribute.

Thank you for your kind comment! If you have some time and/or you're interested, I recently remade this work in the form of a painting, tweaking many aspects of it while keeping the initial intention. [link]

I couldn't have agreed more. Some people may not believe it, but the emotional pain, humiliation, feeling of self-worthlessness, and so many negative emotions really work courses on the victims and lead them to silence and dwelling in the darkness of their despair. It's a tragedy, and believe me I have seen it (I won't go into detail).

I've taken a look at the painted version of this and my, what an improvement! And so much detail and time put into to it as well (not saying this first piece was rushed either). I've also taken a look at the piece "Deliverance-Solution", and not much more to say than another lovely piece and very spot-on of the symbolism and the themes of the situation. And one more thing, it is very true on how deliverance can be achieved; it is very difficult and even painful, but if a victim can gather the internal courage and strength to even at least bring the attack to the light, then it could be a start to begin recovering.

a character of mine got raped and beat the guy up... then he sued her for assault. her family was so unsupportive that they never even asked why she hurt him, so she never told them or the court that he raped her first. got sent to jail. still lives with it.

i might draw her version of this kind of theme... i like how the girls painting the wing, as if shes forcing this kind of innocent look because she thinks that now shes dirty or damaged...

That's horrible how things go against her. That's also the case with Noa, everything/everyone (or almost) are against her.

Thank you! I'll still look forward for it even if you said "might".

Ah...So that's what it was...Well, I couldn't really put myself to think about the significance of it because Miguel's voice kept coming into my head: "C'est tu du sang qui coule de son entre-jambe? Trop Fucktop man!!" XD

Putting all that aside, good job, don't despair much, and keep drawing.

Stunning work. I love the scratchy effect, and the black and white are so crisp and compliment the image so beautifully. I think the concept is so deep and touching, and I think you've done a brilliant job. Wonderful work

I am afraid that the composition might hurt some people's eyes though since some parts are very chaotic along with the big contrast (although these aspects are part of the composition).

Rape is serious business. :paranoid:

Very powerful piece. Actually reminded me a bit of Haibane Renmei, in part because of the wing of course, but also the character style has something similar in it. Not to mention that H.R. is kind of dark too...

Very well done. I love the contrast and the fact that you kept it black and white!

Guess I'm not the only one that thought it was Noa at first glance ._.;;

*cuddles Noa* ;///;

The piece itself is very powerful. The strong contrast between the black and white is particularly effective, as you avoid certain more obvious cliche's. The messiness of some of the elements also adds to the effect. It gets sort of a grotesque feel while still maintaining the beauty of the girl.

I avoided reading your comment at first glance, as I usually do. Picture first, words second, that's IF my brain gets to process them.

The picture came across as jagged, harsh, and gruesome. I knew where the blood between her legs was coming from, so I immediately thought of rape. When I saw the torn wing, I thought of symbolic chastity, because obviously, she's not a virgin anymore; the wing could be taken as her torn virginity, I suppose.

Her face could be taken at least two ways, it could be that she is sad but moving towards hope. It could also be that she is pretending to hope but she herself is not convinced, and that she is crying because there is nothing for her to reach for.

My eyes keep returning back to the brush. It seems to be one of the strongest focal points in the picture, because it''s comparatively crisp compared to some other elements. I immediately thought of the deliverance of a message. She is saying something, weather or not the viewer gets it right or not.

Rape is one of those things that plagues my mind from time to time. I will not walk alone in the dark, and if I do, I do so terrified. To a certain extent, I suppose I have a fear of certain types of men on the back of my mind somewhere. The possibility is always there, although one always hopes for the best.

I've often thought about doing a different kind of rape piece myself, although I have yet to work out the details.

Thank you for taking your time~ I appreciate it a lot! I enjoyed reading your comment and see what you thought before reading my comment. Something is obvious though: since college, you've gotten better in detailed comment XD

Rape is horrifying indeed. The fact that a shocking 80% of rapes actually happen with people the victim knows (family members, best friends...) in places they thought it was safe (in their own freaking house).

Adelynn would make a good subject for a rape piece, don't you think?

My first impression was this: *inside Overa's head*

"Hmmmm...once again a flawless picture by Mur-Mur. What's this? Oh, it's a little girl. Kind-of little. Teenish. Wow, the black and white is pretty cool. What's she painting? She's crying but smiling? Devious? No....*scrolls down* O_O OH DEAR! Mur-Mur drew paint on her legs...but..they way he drew that...it kind-of looks like she's on her period. >_< I'm definetly telling him that in the comme-OHHHHHHHHHH OH MY GOODNESS! Oh dear..I feel like an idiot. That was intentional. That's not paint..it's blood. *reads Artist comments* Wow..he did a great job representing that. *clicks all links, reads their comments* OH LOOKIE! *points at screen* he says to tell him what we thought before we got an explanation! Wah you literally wrote what you were thinking when you saw it XD! Talking about period, someone thought the blood was related to abortion, which fits well in a way. You know... "deliverance", "agony"? Makes sense XD

Abortion does make sense! Cool, the picture can have two meanings. Thanks, people tend to laugh at me and not with me...I'm use to being 'amusing'. ^_^
Ha ha ha ha, it's true though! You ARE everything an artist should be!

#1. They can draw. (Well, you've got THAT down)
#2. They use their art to deliver a message. (Uh huh)
#3. Their pieces make the viewer feel some emotion. :)
#4. If they're really good they can make a viewer feel one, strong emotion and even MULTIPLE emotions. (trying to make us bipolar are you?!?!)
#5. They branch out and explor new media and ideas. *nodds*
#6. Always open for critique until it becomes a burden. (Some times you just get TOO many messages, we all know)
#7. They're awesome. (FREAKIN' AWESOME!)

I wish I could say the same about my work...but I'm a loser much. ^_^ I just need more time to get my mojo down.

Oh man. At first I thought it was Noa, but then I looked at her hair.
I love the background that you chose. It's the city/alleyways, isn't it. That's where it's safe to do it I guess.
Yesterday, I finally decided on the setting for my story. It would be in New York, most of it in the alleyways, around abandoned buildings, etc.. so I'd have to face these particular kinds of things. I've been researching on serial killers to get a hold of Kurri's character. Turns out I didn't have to change anything...

Haha XD It's okay. Thanks for commenting ^^

Actually, yes it is the alleyway, but unlike what you seem to think, it's not where most of rapes happen. In fact, 80% of rapes happen in the victim's home with someone they actually knew and trusted, a shocking 80%. The wall is actually her tormented and state of mind and her delusion. She thought those things happen in alleyways with strangers, but the sad truth is that it isn't. That is why the wall is all stained and uneven; it's nothing more than an illusion.

Hey there! Karmi-Sempai here!

Wow, that's really amazing! I'd love to see this on a poster put out on the streets! There's a great amount of symbolism involved here and you do it in such a striking, yet strangely beautiful way.

My first interpretation: girl coming into a psychedelic state, which can happen to a raped woman. I also thought her surrounding is "the bad neighborhood" because of the crude-looking, blotched up brick wall. Painting an angel wing, I think she's desperate to seek some of the little innocence she has left.

Really wonderful job here, Chison. The way you spread the India ink with the white splotches created an effect that really looks like blood running down a wall. It would certainly be more horrifying if this was colored! Man, I can't draw realistic blood. Also, the expression on her face, as I first saw it, is quite insincere, which you really aimed for. A really great piece for reflecting the horrors of rape! I really believe this should be a poster. :D

Aww thank you so much

I like your interpretation a lot! I didn't mention it, but the wall is supposed to represent her tormented spirit (making the angel wing stand out even more).

Yes it might be more horrifying XD but I think it won't have the same effect if it was colored since the intense black and white are part of the composition. Oh and blood are really hard to draw anyway XD India ink + Chinese brush makes this kind of shape that is good for blood (you know, that calligraphy brush effect?). It's also nice that you could feel the insincere expression on her face. Maybe it's mostly thanks to the way I drew her smile since I never draw mouths like that.

Thank you again for commenting >v<

Its sad how horrifyingly common its become to hear of rape. Its sickening that its happening so often, and its sad that they wont say. But how society is today and quick people are to give pity rather than help, I dont blame them for loosing their voice after such a horrible thing....

Yes, yes it is. I think it's also very depressing to know that in almost 80% of rapes, the victim actually knows the culprit, and those rapist are actually rational thinking people, "normal people" if you like, and not some kind of crazy demented perverted freaks.
